About the documentary film “The Hands Touch the World"(2022)
Aldo Grassini and Daniela Bottegoni are visually impaired couple, who live in Ancona, Marche Italy. They have traveled more than 80 countries, always loved traveling and encountering various cultures around the world. For Aldo and Daniela, the way of knowing different cultures is through touching with their hands. For visually impaired people, the tactile experience “touching with hands” is their way of seeing.
However, there was one place, they were not able to touch, which were the art museums. The main role of art museums is to collect, preserve and exhibit. In order to pass on art works to the next generation, the art works must be appreciated visually from a distance.
Since the most art museums do not allow them to touch, Aldo and Daniela decied to create their own art museum enabling visually impaired people to appreciate art works through the tactile experience. So the Museo Tattile Omero was founded in 1993 by the support of region of Marche and the association of visually impaired and it became the National museum “Museo Tattile Stattale Omero” in 1999. Now the art museum is open to all people.
This documentary film has been filmed and created by a curator in Japan, who has been moved by the story of Aldo and Daniela, wanting to share the story of a couple who never gave up to realize their dream to make art works accessible to everyone.
